PROJECT NAME

Transitions

Transitions is a suspended sculpture hanging in Boston Commons, a dining hall on the campus of Texas Tech at Lubbock. The client requested a thought provoking, yet fun installation, one which would entertain and encourage the student body.

The design consists of 400 hand-blown glass balls, each unique and distinctive in their own right, just like the students they represent. They are suspended at very specific points creating a serpent like creature stirring overhead. At the east end of the building the spheres are sparsely distributed.

As a groups these spheres are drawn under, up and through a huge rusty monolith. This monolith represents the university, with each of the unique cut outs representing a specific course of study. As the spheres travel through this ancient, weathered, character laden monolith their journey becomes obvious and one sees the end result: a clean, precise organized manner. The design symbolizes the path students take as they journey through their education, culminating with a sense of purpose, order and direction.
